Crown and baseboard on a miter saw: nested, flat and vertical capacity from the makers

Miter saw makers list crown and baseboard capacity separately from crosscut. DEWALT lists 7-1/2 in. of crown nested for the DWS779 and Makita 8" for the LS1219L, while Bosch lists the GCM12SD's crown by spring angle: 5-1/4" at 38° and 6" at 45°. For baseboard standing against the fence, the saws here list from 3-7/8" on the GCM12SD to 6-3/4" on the LS1219L.

Crown molding angles

DEWALT's DWS715 manual explains that the two flat surfaces on a piece of crown molding are at angles that add up to exactly 90°. Most, but not all, crown has a 52° top rear angle, the part against the ceiling, and a 38° bottom rear angle, the part against the wall.

The DWS779 manual says that saw is factory set for typical crown in North America (52/38), and that its crown bevel pawl can be reversed to cut non-typical (45/45) crown. (DEWALT)

Taikra doesn't rank or test tools; every figure here is from the maker's own page or manual, linked. Setup steps for each cut are in each saw's manual.

Nested or laying flat: two ways to cut crown

Laid flat on the table, crown is cut with a compound setting. For standard 52/38 crown, the DWS779 manual lists a 33.9° bevel with the miter table at 31.62°. (DEWALT)

The DWS715 has pre-set miter latch points at 31.6° left and a bevel stop pawl at 33.9° left for that cut. (DEWALT)

The other method stands the molding at an angle between the fence and the saw table. DEWALT notes that with this method no bevel cut is required.

Makita describes the crown figure for its LS1219L as crown molding vertically nested, which is the upright position.

Crown capacity by saw

DEWALT lists 7-1/2 in. of crown nested for the DWS779, and crown up to 7-1/2-in nested for the DWS780. (DEWALT)

Makita lists 8" crown (nested) for the 12" LS1219L and 6-5/8" crown (nested) for the 10" LS1019L. (Makita)

The LS1219L manual gives that 8" (203 mm) figure for 45° type crown molding with the crown molding stopper used. (Makita)

Bosch lists the GCM12SD's crown by spring angle, angled against the fence: 5-1/4" for 38° spring crown and 6" for 45° spring crown. (Bosch Power Tools)

Bosch's two figures show that the spring angle changes the listed number, so compare crown figures at the same spring angle where the maker gives one.

Baseboard standing against the fence

DEWALT's DWS779 manual says the saw can cut baseboard held vertically 0.8" thick by 6.75" tall on a 45º right or left miter when the slide lock lever is used, which places the saw to maximize cutting of base molding cut vertically.

DEWALT lists base molding up to 6-3/4-in vertically against the fence for the DWS780.

On the non-sliding DWS715, DEWALT says the fence supports 5-1/2-in base vertically, and the manual lists a maximum of 5.5" high and 1" wide for baseboard vertically against the fence. (DEWALT)

The DWS715 manual gives separate directions for base between 3-5/8" and 5-1/2" tall, and notes that when mitering right on 3-5/8" base standing vertically, the saw can only cut through the board up to 1" from its end. (DEWALT)

Makita lists 6-3/4" base (vertical) for the LS1219L and 5-1/4" for the LS1019L, and Bosch lists a maximum base molding against the fence of 3-7/8" for the GCM12SD. (Makita; Bosch Power Tools)

Wider base can also be cut laying flat with the bevel: the DWS715 manual covers base up to 1.8" thick by 7-11/16" wide that way. (DEWALT)

For bevel direction, slide and blade size, see reading miter saw specs. Every miter saw in the catalogue is on the miter saws page, including the DEWALT DWS779.

Crown and baseboard on a miter saw: questions answered from the sources

What does nested crown capacity mean?

It is crown stood upright at an angle between the fence and the table. Makita describes its LS1219L figure as crown molding vertically nested, and DEWALT's manual notes that no bevel cut is required with this method.

What are the standard crown molding angles?

DEWALT's DWS715 manual says most, but not all, crown molding has a 52° top rear angle and a 38° bottom rear angle, and lists a 33.9° bevel and 31.6° miter for cutting it laid flat.

How tall a baseboard can a 12-inch non-sliding miter saw cut?

For DEWALT's non-sliding DWS715, the manual lists 5.5" high by 1" wide for baseboard standing vertically against the fence.
